Vineyard sites (crus)

Distinctive characters

The loess is paramount in Wagram, yet there are very many differences within the composition of the soils with smaller parcels, especially in the limestone content and in the subsoil. Altitude, slope-inclination and microclimatic conditions have a remarkable influence on the style and quality of the grapes grown. One thing is clear; only the very best sites provide the best wines with the greatest longevity – our Erste Lagen sites. All the names of these single-vineyard sites (Austrian: Rieden) that surround the village of Fels am Wagram are historically recorded names, and a large majority date back to the Middle Ages. Officially recorded and documented with the creation of the “Franziszeisch” land registry in 1821.
