Association of traditional wineries in Austria

THE LEADING COMPANIES IN THE DANUBE AREA

As members of the Traditionsweingüter Österreich (association of traditional wineries in Austria), we see it as our obligation to express the characteristics of our region, our soils, our climate, our varieties and our cellars in the wines. The classification of proven single-vineyard sites is the result of the awareness that great wines only grow in exceptional sites. On the basis of these considerations, the “Association of Austrian Traditional Wineries” was founded in 1992. The objective was to classify these outstanding vineyard sites in the region around the Danube – the so-called “Donauraum” area, in order to give wine enthusiasts and consumers guidance in the great variety of the wines of the world. For more than two decades, member wineries have been looking closely at their wines. On the basis of these ideals, prized vineyards were tasted and analyzed in their development from sites along the Danube in the wine regions Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental and Wagram. The “2013 Classification” enabled a total of 62 vineyards to carry the term “Erste Lage” on the wine label. In keeping with the Districtus Austriae Controllatus (DAC) regulations, the permitted grape varieties are Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, bottled in a dry style. These are the most traditional varieties for the region. The Leth family winery has been a member of Austrian traditional winery since 2015, and our Grüner Veltliner and Riesling wines originate from the Brunnthal and Scheiben classified vineyard sites and may therefore bear the designation “Erste Lage”.
